For some reaon your /etc/passwd isn't configured. You didn't install via setup.exe or you updated your system from 9x, perhaps? Anyway, use mkpasswd and mkgroup tools to generate /etc/passwd and /etc/group files and care EXPLICITELY for the home dir and shell entries.
