I recently installed cygwin because I wanted the shell utilities, and DOS batch files weren't cutting it. I'm trying to get the hang of it, and I think I've got some of the fundamentals down, but I'm still confused by a lot of the language and don't know many of the procedures. Anyway, I'm currently trying to install the cygwin version of BC which I downloaded. I gunzipped and detarred it, but when I tried to use it I got this error message (in a windows dialog box entitled "error starting program"): A required .DLL file, C:\CYGWIN\USR\LOCAL\BIN\BC.EXE, was not found. Along with a error in the shell reading: BASH: /usr/local/bin/bc: Permission denied There is a file named BC in that directory, but not BC.exe. Because of the "permission denied" message I tried chmod 777 BC, but the permissions didn't change (I looked this up in the FAQ, and I now know permissions can't be changed on Win 9x). Because of the "BC.EXE not found" error, I also I tried renaming bc to bc.exe, but that didn't help. What am I doing wrong? How can I get bc to work? Thanks for any help, -D.
