I run configure on the source tree and all is fine. I start the make and all appears well until I get to building gcc. At this point the native cygwin gcc produces assembler errors. Upon inspection I find that the configure has put a soft link into the gcc directory to the cross-assembler in the gas directory. If I run 'gcc -v --help' the problem is apparent; it seems that gcc's specs currently do not explicitly define the assembler it is to use and so it picks up the one in the current directory if it exists (please see the output at the end of this message). If I remove the link the build proceeds to the point where the new compiler (xgcc) is invoked to build libreries and then this fails because it cannot find the right assembler. Note this is not a problem if you are build a native compiler and toolchain; it only becomes an issue when building cross platform support. On this basis I am inclined to believe no one has picked this up so far. Is this a bug or is there a way to configure around this problem? I realize this may not be the right place to get an answer but since this version of gcc is part of cygwin I assume it's at least the right place to ask.
