I wasn't able successfully to repair it using .muttrc, but I WAS able to fix it by creating a revailases file for ssmtp, creating an alias like this: charles:my_account AT my DOT isp DOT com I'm not sure if that's the most elegant possible solution, but it did solve my immediate problem. I wasn't able to convince ssmtp to use "my_account" using settings in .muttrc, but that may only be applicable to ssmtp.
