Samba versions 2.06+ return an improper result when a directory is missing; I sent in the patch and DJ applied it, resulting in setup 2.13. Furthermore, since you work at Cygnus, with DJ, I am assuming that you are using Samba 2.05, as DJ said he tested setup with that version and it worked fine; so, the bug may never present itself to you.
