But it also needs to be exported. TERM=cygwin export TERM or export TERM=cygwin Either works in bash. Also be sure the file is not DOS text mode (contains pairs). If it does, then the actual value of TERM is being set to cygwin which is not a valid terminal name. If these doesn't fix the problem, then I have not a clue.
