I had not thought about that, Guess I'm going to have to redo the makefile.in and the makefile.am with a wordprocessor and save it to text.
What it was trying to do was write a text called Makefile. Sed was the program.

Did you check the line endings of the file?  DOS Style \r\n vs UNIX Style \n?
