Confirm it hangs in bash but not with dash/ash:

$ dash ./here-toobig.sh
here-toobig.sh: error: cannot find input file: 'Makefile.in'
$ grep -nC3 echo\ \'BEGIN here-toobig.sh

and Cygwin works with 64KB "pages" and temp buffer sizes.
