FYI to Cygwin users,

XChat is dead. its last release was 2.8.9 in 2010. And its main
developer charged money for proprietary Windows builds without gaining
the licensing consent of other contributors 1st!

HexChat is the de-facto continuation of XChat. It was originally known
as XChat-WDK because it only targeted Windows, and was built using the
WDK. It renamed itself to HexChat once it became a general-purpose
cross-platform replacement for XChat.

Many Linux distros still offer both XChat and Hexchat. But their
versions of Xchat are merely 2.8.9 (2010) or 2.8.8 (2010) with a bunch
of patches.

Compare XChat to OpenOffice:

XChat is an important part of open source history, but that is also what
it is at this point in time.
