Subject: Repeated errors message when starting lyx

On first use of lyx there is a stream of first use related activity.
As far as I know I have all dependencies in place, but on 2nd and all 
subsequent uses I get the repeated error messages
     QIconvCodec::convertToUnicode: using Latin-1 for conversion, 
iconv_open failed
     QIconvCodec::convertFromUnicode: using Latin-1 for conversion, 
iconv_open failed
The lyx window opens and, as far as I can tell, everything works.
Can anybody please tell me the likely cause of the error messages and 
whether/ how I can mend my system?
