That's the way it should be.

That shouldn't happen.  Can you show me the contents of ~/.startxwinrc? 
  And exactly how are you starting emacs?  Is it from an xterm that is 
started in ~/.startxwinrc?  If not, then the method I suggested for 
starting a D-Bus daemon might not work for you.
