I now have .bash_profile calling ~/.bashrc. Just had a look at the ~/.profile script on my linux box and I can see where it is making the call to the local ~/.bashrc file ... # if running bash if [ -n "$BASH_VERSION" ]; then # include .bashrc if it exists if [ -f "$HOME/.bashrc" ]; then . "$HOME/.bashrc" fi fi ... I guess I am too used to having this already set-up for me. Thanks again for the help. From "info bash" , Node: Bash Startup Files When Bash is invoked as an interactive login shell, or as a non-interactive shell with the `--login' option, it first reads and executes commands from the file `/etc/profile', if that file exists. After reading that file, it looks for `~/.bash_profile', `~/.bash_login', and `~/.profile', in that order, and reads and executes commands from the first one that exists and is readable. Note to Neil: .bashrc_profile is ignored by bash.
