  You've got DOS line-endings in your makefile or somewhere like that; the
error message has half-overwritten itself.

  Common reasons why this might happen include unpacking a tarball using a
windows GUI program (they often "helpfully" convert line-ends for you,
always use cygwin's command-line tar), or manually making changes to a file
using a windows editor such as notepad or wordpad.  The solution in the
first case is to blow it away and re-unpack it properly, in the second case
is to use 'd2u' after editing a file with a windows editor.
