Sorry, replied directly before noticing this message.

The second problem is caused by a step I forgot, which is documented in=20
the installation instructions /usr/share/denyhosts/README.txt: you have=20
to copy daemon-control-dist to the script used and edit (if necessary)=20
the 3 lines about location of things.

The first problem is probably caused by the second one.  Let me know if=20
it's still a problem and I'll check further.
