You can look at the imagebase value in the .exe with and without being built with that option and I'm quite sure it will remain the same. I don't know what it is that makes the crash sensitive to libncurses being rebased, but it's not something that follows from the semantics of what the auto image base feature is supposed to do, i.e. it's accidental. It would also be a good exercise to try this (i.e. rebuild libncurses and emacs) with current CVS binutils as there have been reported (and fixed) at least one bug with text relocs being calculated incorrectly that causes the resulting DLL to crash if it's rebased.
