Could not reproduce.

/etc/smartd.conf is not updated if it differs from the default 
(/etc/defaults/etc/smartd.conf).

Try the following commands to test:

sh -x /etc/preremove/smartmontools.sh
sh -x /etc/postinstall/smartmontools.sh.done
