I have updated this for gcc mainline (now 4.1) and submitted the patch
http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2005-02/msg01765.html today.

If it is accepted, I will see if I can get it into gcc-4.0, although it 
may now be too late for 4.0.0
