Igor, 
I believe that the // prefix has special meaning in Posix.
All I could find in a few minutes was the last paragraph in the 
"Pathname Resolution" section of
http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/007904975/toc.htm
So the upstream maintainer should care.
