Assuming it is in bash you type these *cough* wonderful *cough*
characters ;-), making sure you have a ~/.inputrc file containing

# Make Bash 8bit clean
set meta-flag on
set convert-meta off
set output-meta on

Might fix it..

p.s. well I agree with you that the french characters might be funny,
иаб and so on, while the swedish used дце are wonderful ;-)
