You are correct.  As it happens, I was messing around with this today -- 
only direct dependencies need to be included on the link line.

Ah.  Well, thanks for giving it a shot.  Now, back to your regularly 
scheduled libgdbm-based (not libgdbm3-based) build of perl. <g>
