Ooops

On furher investigation this appears to be related to the 
'ls' command rather then the pseudo '/proc' files

try interrupting any 'ls' command with a 'Ctrl-C'
It appears as if the shell always seems to return
  < if you wait long enough >
so this isn't a 'hard hang' at all
