You're doing something wrong and the problem is not specific to Cygwin.
Look at the documentation for less and try the '-r' or '-R' options.
BTW, if you look hard enough, you'll find this question asked and 
answered in the email archives.  It's a great place to check when you 
have questions like this (in addition to the FAQ and on-line docs).
