Sorry that I burst in here, but I'm having similar problems with make on
another system (well, to be honest ... on UWIN ... don't hit me!).
UWIN's shipped with make 3.76.1 but I've built my own 3.79.1 and both
versions suffer from occasional hangs, not crashes, in recursive makes. I
saw this problem with csh scripts executed from makefiles and sometimes with
sh scripts.
Last week I found a seemingly reproducible case for recursive make hangs.
I'm going to debug this. If I find out what's going wrong on UWIN I'll let
you know, maybe there's a simple solution which works for both systems.
