I have the login package, and am able to login.

I created an /etc/passwd and filled in the password field with the result
of crypt my_password

I can type
# login
login: tjc1
Password:my_password
Fanfare!!!
You are successfully logged in to this server!!!

Thanks for the idea though. I guess I should heve mentioned this before.
