Nick, probably you should sit back an try out the code
segment at different alignments. On my (old) K6 it is
very important if an instruction crosses 16- and/or
32-byte alignments. This might influence the speed
of the code. There is already a thread discussing that
in Mai'00. This alignment seems to effect the speed of
Athlon (at least the older designs) too.

Take a look at that thread, it might help you
