Subject: | How to make a "configure" script use custom compiler flags |

I have an AMDK6 and I'm trying to figure out how to make a 'configure' script (comes with many source tarballs, like the KDE sources) to use my custom list of compiler flags for best optimization. I've tried setting CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS before executing configure, but that didn't change the flags used in the Makefiles that were created by configure.
