Other than using EMM/QEMM and the devicehigh and 
loadhigh commands to make sure that drivers get 
loaded into "upper" ram (unused areas betweem 640k 
and the 1 meg limit, there's not much you can do if 
the programs aren't written to use it.

Desqview or Taskmgr effectively create separate 
"640k" (minus drivers)areas for each task. 

BTW, your modem is probably hanging up because the 
DTR signal is going away when you switch to another 
task.

With DV, you can configure a task so it has 
exclusive access to a particular com port. Not sure 
how you do that with Taskmgr. Or even if you can.
