Huh? I've never played with a WinModem, but Neil did not mention modems
at all, so unless WinModems always include a sound card (dunno), I'm not
sure if that's what Neil is asking about(?).

Also, AFAIK, WinME *is* DOS+Windoze, although I'm told it prohibits most
alterations to "CONFIG.SYS" and "AUTOEXEC.BAT".

Anyway, back to the problem at hand - Firstly, perhaps a SysInfo program
like AMIDIAG 6 (www.ami.com) or http://www.navsoft.cz/indexen.htm can
detect what sound hardware you have?

Many DOS programs support SoundBlaster sound cards and can access
these directly, if an environment variable called BLASTER (IIRC) is defined,
giving the port addresses, interrupt numbers, etc. So, if your sound card
or hardware is "SoundBlaster compatible", you may need only to find out
these parameters (hopefully the above software or other means can help)
and set up this environment variable in your "AUTOEXEC.BAT".

In my own case, I have a sound card, based on a Crystal chip, which is
dormant at power-up. It can be software configured as "SoundBlaster
compatible" or alternatively (IIRC), "Windoze sound system compatible"
(some other pseudo-standard MonoSoft wanted to force everyone into,
perhaps part of the WinModem rubbish). So, I run a configuration program
(supplied with the card) that configures/enables it as "SB compatible" and
also sets the above environment variable. Your sound card or hardware
might already be "SB compatible" (or perhaps with jumper settings?). Or
it might be software configurable, with or (like mine) without non-volatile
memory, to retain it's configuration between power-ups.

You might (?) also find some info. at "http://www.jwcs.net/dap/".

Joe.
