Initial success was with the configuration unchanged since your last
instructions eg emm386 with exclusions you worked out.
-yes with /MULTI
-no not the TASKMGR /S switch (thats always worked, so I havent
been testing it.)
Multitasking is working: in the sense that I can start something that
takes a long time, switch to another task, and when I switch back,
the first process has completed.
Ive started working through the prototypes you sent in private mail
now, but I have copies of the configuration as was, if you want me
to do anything? (willing, --but perhaps not very able:-). Ive tried with
the original "automatic setup" config too. The only problem with that
configuration was pkunzip not liking DPMI -- I suppose this is a
separate issue? (Anyway, I can disable PKZIPS 32 bit DPMI usage,
as the "PK help" says. Or instead, I tried CWSDPMI is detected and
works.)
For the sake of completeness I will mention that, using
CTRL+number to switch to a task, if (say) task #1 is current and I
press CTRL+1 ie "switch" to current task, (of course nothing
happens--the screen flickers is all) the keyboard stops working
properly within that task, specifically keys behave as CTRL+key
combinations. This happens with AND without FREEKEYB installed.
Of course, theres no point in doing this, but sometimes one forgets
the number of the current task, and does it accidentally.

Oh dear I am sorry. I wont. Thanks for telling me.

Richard.
