Arachne has ppp with dynamic ip support bundled in and an easy install
menu, if you are using a modem to get to the internet. Is there an
advantage to using the above software??
Since most of our machines sit on a local network, we use DHCP support
from a linux box on the same backbone.
If you use the telnet and ftp plugins with arachne, you have to either
assign static IPs on each client :-( or have BOOTP support from
somewhere. Fortunately, the DHCP software in linux still provides
support for BOOTP. The plugins are versions of NCSA Telnet from the
University of Illinois, tweaked at Clarkson College, and don't have DHCP
support. The "Phone" package from the University of Minnesota has a nice
user interface and supports slip and will grap the ip out of the data
stream. Not many ISPs still support slip, but a few do.
