Those things you mention does happen, but his problem is not unique. It
happens a lot and it is the drives that are to blame. They will not work
with each other with 100% compatibility between drive manufactures.

Yes this can happen to. However after you tell the person to RTFM, they
can find their error(s). Someone mentioned that they don't read the
drive manuals. Not all drives have the striped wire toward the same
side.
