Fri, 9 Feb 2001 Matthias Paul asked:
>Which utility are you using to play audio CDs?
I tried a lot. Most of them wiped off the HD. Ended up with _CDPLAY_ a
small player by Guenther Klaming which does the job most of the time.
Others were MPXPLAY (1.42) , DAC (2.3) -its a ripper but plays audio
tracks too, then the _original_ Mitsumi PLAYCD (1.30) which is a mess.
IIRC I tried SET editor too :-)
These were the progs that worked at least.
I would prefer a combination with mp3 player,
but thats another sad story.
In the end it makes the difference in using MSCDEX
instead of NWCDEX to get the 2nd drive playing audio.
I made a few lines hack. (PLAYCD.COM)
It does not much more than tell to INT2F/1510 to play
a lot of frames (>81 minutes should suffice :-) ) of
a specified drive. That does the trick even with NWCDEX.
I couldnt figure out more about (2nd) audio cd even with RBIL.
But a command line tool telling: _play whole CD_
is far away from a lightweight cdplayer ;-)
>What happens if you change the order of the two
>/D:drivername switches in the NWCDEX command line.
>Are you then able to play audio on both drives?
Ok, did some rechecking. Switched to PTSATAPI.SYS
(from PTSDOS) as driver. How else should I get two /D:name_x ?
and logically switched the drives in NWCDEX.
Result: only the messy util from mitsumi played the CDROM now
beeing label "first". This prog knows only about one CD-drive,
so no saying about the CDRW.
The other players failed completely in recognising :-(
PLAYCD.COM as well :-((
But dont count to much: I only remember by far...
Once I decided in stopping ptsatapi for serious reasons.
Despite the very low memory footprint.. maybe it was something in
protected mode..
btw. using other drivers,
the redirector SHSUCDEX mentioned in freedos doesnt
allow play audio at all? Am I right?
>Are you using any other ...
No. For testing purpose I only use a minimalistic setup. Really.

[NWCDEX may behave different with versions]
I tested versions
2.10 (us) 2.80 (us+de) 2.81 (us+de) from my _original_ and
updates 11, 13, 15 of Novell DOS.
Could not find any difference regarding 2nd CD audio.
ver 2.50 from OD 7.01 I do not have.
>refering to a quad-speed drive?
Yes.
CDRW is treated as CDROM in this case. Its a Ricoh MP7040A.
But in the end we can discuss till dawn,
no one has told whether a constallation with
2 cdrom drives works for him or not. :-(
I hope this will change.
All the best,
Utz
