You can do this by going to DOS MODE. Why do you want to use a limited
DOS window anyway? I advised you to do this a long time ago. MAKE A
SHORTCUT FOR DOS MODE if ME allows this. I don't see why it would not.
Then after vreating the shortcut and making it DOS MODE, you can edit
the autoexec and config files to suit whatever you want. I don't have 9x
on this system or I'd show you step by step how to do it. Basically you
create a shortcut to the command.com you want to use, or 4dos or
whatever. Then you right click on the icon and select properties. There
are several tabs to choose from. Check them all out and one will give
you the option to use DOS Mode and after you put a dot in that option,
one or more additional options will highlight. One of those deal with
customizing the autoexec and config files. Some of those options when
chosen will also allow other options and some stuff will be put in
automatically for you like the sound drivers. These files should be
named: CONFIG.DOS and AUTOEXEC.DOS when you are completed. You can then
edit them in DOS when you reboot to DOS. When you do reboot to DOS, a
message will come up about something about allowing direct writes to
disk or some such. Choose to allow this.
On second thought I do not know if that would be a good idea to allow
direct writes to a FAT 32 under DOS. It would depend on how DRDOS
7.04/05 handles this. I have no experience with it aas I no longer
bother to use FAT 32. I use NTFS and do everything I want with other
operating system through DOS Linux (now called Loop Linux.) So I would
suggest that you do a few harmless writes, like save some text files you
create, then go into WINDOZE and run SCANDISK and see if any erors
occur. Then try making some harmless files in WINDOZE like text files
from NOTEPAD and then boot into DOS Mode and delete them, then go back
to WINDOZE and run SCANDISK. If all is okay, then direct write will
PROBABLY be okay. I also would run SCANDISK before going into DOS Mode
the first time just to make sure it was not DOS that caused a problem
that may currently exist. RUN it in WINDOZE and do a thorough SCAN.
Is still cannot figure out why anyone would want to run DOS on a FAT 32
partition. Most of yor programs cannot read FAT 32. I certainly would
not be able to use Central Point Back Up or any other Central Point or
Norton's utilities on a FAT 32. I would not even be able to use my shell
program (1dirplus.)
You can buy small IDE and/or SCSI drives real cheap on ebay or Yahoo and
other auctions. Why not just pick up one of these and divide it into
127MB and/or 255MB FAT 16 partitions and make it a DOS only drive. I
have seen these small drives go for a buck plus shipping or buy a box
full of them for five or ten bucks.
I have a 345MB Maxtor IDE (329 formatted) and have the first partition
of about 70 some MB and the second partition of 255MB, noth FAT 16 and
use it for DOS. I also put some WINDOZE backup files on it that I RAR
under WINDOZE for some of my DATA files. That way if NT should ever get
corrupted I can restore these files quickly and easily and not have yo
bother with the tape drive and surching though dozens of tapes for the
files.
