Well, regarding DOSBOOK, I must say that one of it's problems is
that it is quite difficult to track down "low level" stuff with it, such as
CONFIG.SYS commands, batch language stuff, INI files, etc. It
really assumes that you will use SETUP to do everything and can
be rather frustrating!

WRT your KEDIT problem, perhaps using the M$W HIMEM.SYS
and M$W EMM386.EXE together (with DR-DOS) will work ... ?

WRT colours, yes(!) that stark white (inspired by Windoze?) is
terrible, particularly if your video card is crappy and flickers and
has no DOS drivers to "bump up" the refresh rate (this actually
causes ALL the card's frequencies to increase, including the
horrible flicker that afflicts many cards ...).

Note however, that SETUP _does_ provide the capability to set
your "system" colours, as used by many of the DR-DOS utilities,
including EDIT. Can't recall the exact menu within SETUP at the
moment, but just have a look around in SETUP - it should be
easy enough to find ... Once you find this, you will have a choice
of about eight different colour schemes. None of them are all
that pretty, but they are mostly much better than stark white!
It is even possible to modify these colour schemes and add
one or two of your own (not within SETUP, of course) - if you
are interested, I can "dig up" a colour scheme that I created a
while ago (by "trial and error") which is similar to the pre-6.0
Turbo Pascal IDE ...
