  The safest option is to assume text unless asked otherwise. I use plain
text with all my correspondents and I've never been asked to change to HTML.

  I don't see how reading manuals would apply here. Unless you can tell 
me where in my manual it says "90% of people to whom Patrick Moran sends 
mail prefer to have it formatted as HTML".
