7.02 had some problems. It would not load DOS into HMA, at least it =
would
not load COMMAND.COM up there. It would load some of the stuff, like =
SHARE
and BUFFERS into HMA. Get 7.03. You can get it at ftp.lineo.com. Look =
the
directories for a subdirectory named IMAGES. this will have the diskette
images and the files required to make the floppies. Boot from the first
floppy and it will start the installation process.
There is a lot of documentation for it. First is the DOSBOOK. Just type
DOSBOOK at the DOS prompt. There are also several text files that tell =
you
how to set things up. The ini files are setup for you when you install =
it.
There are a few things that can be fine tuned for communications for the
Taskmanager.
I have not actually used the multi-boot with 98, but am using it with
Mellenium (which is another later version of 98) with no problems. Be =
sure
to use a disk editor and make a copy of the MBR (or use FDISK and select =
to
reinstall the old MBR, this will create a file named OLDMBR.BIN. Copy =
this
file to another file with a different name. Then go back and use FDISk =
and
choose to retore the MBR. The MBR will then be put back to what it was
before you started.) and a copy of the boot sector of the =
drive/partition
you are booting from. Do this before you install any other OS. This way =
if
you decide to eliminate the other OS, you can restore the computer back =
to
what it was before the new OS was installed.
Here is how I have my system set up. I have a 345Mb IDE hard drive. This =
is
DRIVE 1. I have a 3.1GB SCSI drive, this is DRIVE 2. I have a 256MB =
Syquest
SCSI removeable cartridge drive. This is DRIVE 3.
I have DRIVE 1, the IDE divided up into two partitons. The first is =
70MB+
and the second partition is 255MB. What was left from 255 was used for =
the
first partition. The actual true size of the drive is about 329.1MB. I
installed DRDOS 7.03 on the first partition. I saved the MBR and boot =
record
to files so I could revert back to a clean DOS system without having to
FDISK and reFORMAT. I then install WINDOZE ME to a 1GB partiton on =
DRIVE2.
This is in an extended partition and is something like the 3rd or 4th
partition on this drive. Can't remember what I did with what partitions,
believe the first is a primary Linux ext2 partition, the second is a 1GB =
FAT
16 primary, the third is a 676MB+ primary NTFS, the fourth is a DOS =
extended
partion of about 1.2GB. I believe the first logical partition is the 1GB =
FAT
32 for WINDOZE and the second logical is a 150MB FAT 16.
After running setup for WINDOZE, it put it's startup files in C: drive. =
It
then boots to WINDOZE. You cannot get to DOS. Boot the system with a DOS
diskette or WINDOWS startup diskette and go to the DRDOS directory and =
run
LOADER. You will now be able to boot to either DOS or WINDOZE. WINDOZE =
Will CHANGE BOTH THE MBR AND BOOT SECTOR of DRIVE C:. Then I installed =
NT. NT also changes the MBR and BOOT RECORD of DRIVE C:. I had a heck of =
a time when I took 95 off and reinstalled it. I could not get back into =
NT. luckily I have save the whole system files with CP PCTools and was =
able to restore
it back so that I could now also use NT. So before I installed WINDOZE =
ME, I
save the MBR and BOOT SECTOR. I had to remove ME because the idiots did =
not
include the DRIVERsS I needed. So I had to go back and install a minimal =
95
install, the use ME upgrade so I could get the proper Video and Modem =
drivers. The stupid ME did not even detect the COM and LPT ports before =
I tried the upgrade methode. Had to install those manually. Boy Gates =
has got his head up his @$$. Well finally got ME installed with all the =
correct drivers. (IDIOTS) Fortunately I had a copy of the MBR and BOOT =
sectors and restored the system back to what it was before ME was =
installed. Wiped all the ME files from DRIVE C:, FORMATTED drive G: =
(WINDOZE DRIVE) and installed 95. Then upgraded to ME. What a pain in =
the butt. But I have plenty of experience %^(!!^& with WINDOZE and know =
how to prepare for it's mess ups.=20
In this case, since I use drive C: to boot both WINDOZE, NT, and DOS, =
the
boot record is located a physical sector: Cylinder 0, Track 1, Sector 1. =
If
you use another partition to boot from, the CHS for the boot sector will =
be
different. The MBR is always Cylinder 0, Track/Head 0, Sector 1 of the =
boot
drive.
NOTE: With newer BIOS and SCSI, it is possible to boot from different
drives. The MBR for each drive will be at the same location. The first
partitions BOOT SECTOR will always be located on the first sector of
track/head 1 of cylinder 0. You can look at the partition table to =
determine
where the other BOOT SECTORS are. They are located in the first sector =
of
the cylinder where each partition starts.
I keep my first partition small. so I can back it up quickly on tape and =
if
something goes wrong I can format that partition and restore from the =
tape
quickly and screw WINDOZE!
Also when installing WINDOZE I use the setup option T:D:\TEMP to tell
WINDOZE to use a TEMP directory of DRIVE D: so that I do not run into a =
lack
of drive space on drive C: At one time I only had a 32MB partition for =
DRIVE
C:, but wanted to repartition my IDE drive into two partitions from =
several
and wanted one that was just under 256MB so that I would have small =
cluster
size. This left 70+ MB for drive C:, so I used that setup. I have a =
floppy
with the PCTools backup prgram and backup data files in a self =
extracting
RAR files. ZIP could also be used. I wrote an AUTOEXEC.BAt file that =
would
execute everything automatically and in a few minutes DRIVEC: will be
restored. (BOOT RECORD, MBR and all.)
