Hi!
I found on an archive the beta (1995!!) from PTS-DOS 7.0. I downloaded it
and read the readme. This is very interesting (but I don't think that they
will do that :( ):
_________ We are going to make:
- Virtual extended memory // very
interesting (but not included in PTS 2000, I think)
- Decrease required memory size to <2Mb
- Accelerate disk operations by~40%
- DPMI support //
like above
- Windows support
- Writing in HPFS, CHKDSK and FORMAT programs with HPFS
- Built-in CD-ROM support
// I think they mean, that you can start it in config.sys with the install
command.
- Built-in mouse driver
- Built-in disk compression utility
- Built-in antivirus protection
- Built-in network
- COM-port buffering
- 4DOS commands support in COMMAND.COM
- UPS support // whats that?
- Green functions // whats that?
And for the future :)
- PTS-DOS 8.0: multitasking DOS in text mode, new features:
concurrent executing of DOS, Windows, OS/2 full screen
and DESQview applications
print spooler
Clipboard, common with Windows
NTFS and Windows 95 FAT support
Flash-RAM support
REXX command files support
OS/2 full screen tasks executing
- PTS-DOS 9.0 (PTS-Win 2000): multitasking operating system with graph
interface. New features:
TCP/IP support
graphic interface based on X Windows ¿ OSF/Motif standards
concurrent executing of DOS, DESQview, Windows, Windows 95,
OS/2 (full screen ¿ PM), BSD Unix programs.
It would be interesting, if they continue developing now and which features
they will include (if they continue.) If FreeDOS would have this features
like PTS 8.0 I would be lucky :-))))))
But maybe in the future...
Another question:
FreeDOS (the kernel) had also an IFS file. Did it include the FAT system
like PTS-DOS?
If yes, why is it included into the kernel yet? It would be easier to
include more file systems!!
At the end: I included the full readme file! It isn't a word file, only
plain text.
Bye, Florian

32-bit access operating system PTS-DOS 7.0
Beta release 0001 20/06/95.
Note: This version of PTS-DOS is a Beta-version. Therefore =
PhysTechSoft
is not responsible for any possible damage caused directly or indirectly =
by
the attempt to use this version of PTS-DOS.
Hardware requirements:
- Processor i386 or higher
- At least 4M of conventional memory
This version containes the hypertext help system which actually =
corresponds=20
to the previous 16-bit version PTS-DOS 6.5. The most of its commands are =
supported in the ver. 7.0. But some utilities are omitted in this =
beta-version7.0 and you won't be able to run corresponding commands. =20
=20
For help just type "ELF" in command string (elf.com)
But it does not exactly correspond to the new version 7.0, therefore=20
please read the following information:
What is new in this version 7.0=20
in comparison with PTS-DOS 6.5:
- More conventional memory.
- External memory manager is not required for UMB
- Built-in disk CACHE
- Support of HPFS (High Performance File System), which is used by OS/2
- The system is better protected against incorrect application work.
- You may edit configuration file when booting DOS.
- 32-bit block-mode access to IDE disks
- Non-standart floppy disk format support (including 2M)
What is new in configuration file
in comparison with PTS-DOS 6.x:
- The BOOT Manager first looks for CONFIG.PT7, then for CONFIG.PTS, and =
then
for CONFIG.SYS
- BOOT Manager menu has a coursor, so you may select the section by =
pressing
arrow keys and enforce it by pressing "Enter"; or you may select it =
and
define as default section by pressing Ctrl-Enter.
- BOOT Manager menu has additional section - SETUP. On choosing it you
may edit configuration file ("Setup mode")
- Changes in section [Bootmgr] syntax :
- STORAGE and CMOSADDR commands are ignored. Default section is always
written to file.
- Default filename for default section name is AUTOBOOT.PT7
- SHIFTSTATE and VIDEOMODE commands can also be used in [Bootmgr] =
section.
- The following commands of configuration file are ignored:
MULTITRACK, STACKS, SWITCHES, COMAREA, CPU, ERREXE, EXECA20OFF, =
HMAAREA,
SHUTDOWN, STUBA20, VIRTDMA, VGASCREEN, WINDOWS, DISKETTE.
- New configuration commands:
AUTOMATIC - enforces "automatic" mode, where DOS does not dump
user prompts but makes default decisions;
VERBOSE - enforces detailed prompt mode;
(Both these commands may be used also in [BootMgr] section)
LOGO=3D<filename/YES/NO/ON/OFF> - sets a filename for the =
startscreen
displayed when booting DOS, or switches
it off. If ECHO or VERBOSE commands
are used, the startscreen is "off"
by default, otherwise default filename
is PTSLOGO.SYS.
NONDP - advises DOS that there is no coprocessor.
MEMMGR=3D<path and filename> - sets a name for memory manager. =
Default
name is PTSMMGR.SYS
DISKCACHE=3D<path and filename> - sets a name for disk cache. =
Default name
is PTSCACHE.SYS
BASEDEV=3D<path and filename> [<parameters>] - Loads a base driver.
The list of base drivers and their
parameters see below.
DOSKRNL=3D<path and filename> - sets the name for DOS kernel.=20
default
name is PTSKRNL.SYS
IFS=3D<path and filename> [<parameters>]- Loads the file system =
driver.
The list of file system drivers and
their parameters see below.
UMBRAM[=3D<size/address range>] - Allocates UMB in upper =
memory.
If there is no parameters, UMB
is allocated in all allowed upper
memory addresses, if <size>=20
parameter is specified - UMB =
is=20
allocated until
its size reaches the specified one.
if <address range> is specified,
UMB is located in this range.
NOUMB - disables UMB support
FIXEDRAM=3D<address range> - informs memory manager that UMB
has already been located
in this address range.
SHADOWROM[=3D<ROM address/address range>] - enforces "shadow"
ROM in RAM.
If there is no parameters,
all ROM blocks are copied=20
to RAM;
if <ROM address> is=20
specified,
the block from this address
is copied; if <address=20
range> is specified, =
the=20
blocks from this =
address=20
range are copied.
INCLUDE=3D<address range> - makes memory manager to use memory
in the address range specified
EXCLUDE=3D<address range> - Makes memory manager not to use
address range specified.
ADAPTERROM=3D<address range> - points that the ADAPTERROM is =
located in
the address range specified
ADAPTERRAM=3D<address range> - points that the ADAPTERRAM is =
located in
the address range specified
