You may just have a bad drive. I have one which
I was using for two years, then I tried to transfer it
to another computer and it crashed, literally, and
made a lot of noise with heads bouncing on the disks.
Also you could have the drive cable in wrong.
The red line on the flat data cable goes to the
number 1 pin on the drive and to the drive controller
on the board. If you check it on the drive you can
usually find the number on the bottom of the board.
If not, then the correct position is next to the power
cable, in most cases.
There is a very good book by Mark Minasi called
PC Upgrade & Maintenance Guide, published by
Sybex. Also Scott Mueller has a book Upgrading &
Repairing PCs, published by QUE. Either one of
these books will give you everything you need to
know about computers and each comes with a CD
with programs for testing and configuring your PC
and data tables for hard drives, motherboards and
other things. Minasi has some of his lectures on
the CD so you can hear him explain while you are
looking at the parts he is explaining.
