As it happens I was having major problems of a similar kind yesterday. My
machine was hanging after LI appeared on the screen, then it wouldn't boot
at all.
I eventually remembered the fdisk/mbr command and that fixed the problem
for me.

If you can't get it to work, Spinrite (http://grc.com) will supposedly
recover data from any drive that the computer recognises, even if the
computer can't access it.
I was about 5 minutes away from buying it :-)
