Dean:

I´ve been using DRDOS for years. I have a TPA size of 625K on my current
system, which is what you want to run big programs. Most systems can get
at least 600K of TPA assuming the memory manager is loading.

First, if you just modify your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files
manually, you are bypassing the whole setup program. Glen McCorkle and
others have sent some listings of these files for you to try.

Second, you can load drivers, including MSCDEX, in high memory (above
the video memory). This is done manually by trial and error, and a
little effort can get you better results than MEMMAKER. DRDOS 6 and 7
have consistently given me more TPA than MSDOS 6.

As a consultant, I used to see a lot of MSDOS 5 and 6 systems choked
down to below 400K of TPA, especially on the old XTs that did not have
high memory. I guess that I would be leaving something out if I did not
mention that some of the old ATs could have CMOS setup problems that
interfered with the mapping of memory (usually producing "A20 gate"
messages).

Good luck!
