I have a copy of novell dos 7 unleashed, author jonathan kamin, published
by sams publishing in 1994. a lot of good stuff about ndos7 in depth.
apparently, in multi-tasking mode, task manager is limited to 20 tasks
open and any comunications programs must be run up front. running them
in the background causing big time timing errors. there is nothing there
about booting up and automatically running task manager with multiple
programs, but there is task managers menu, which you use after bootup to
program the hot keys and set up all the programs you want in order of
use? each task is actually running in virtual 8086 mode and you have to
specify how much memory each task (program) is allowed to use. sounds
like a 266mhz pentium/300mhz alpha with maybe 256 meg of ram would come
in handy for a bbs. each task has to share a slice of time off the
processor so it is definitely a bandwidth hog, and not to good on a
286/386. with a 486 100mhz machine, even with 128 meg of ram it would
problably bog down if you had more than ten users on-line.
what about some of the old bbs programs for dos like wildcat. i have a
copy on a disk from a 1993 que book by allen l. wyatt, sr. 'killer dos
utilities'. it only requires 2meg to load the program and supplemental
files and 20 meg to run the bbs, on a pc compatible with 512k ram and
350k free for wildcat. i seem to recall there were also several other
small bbs shareware programs, such as rbbs (no fee), for dos about 5-6
years ago, just before the herd got on the mswin bandwagon.
