The predominant word prosessing software are ApplixWare and StarOffice.
Both are MS Office like.

Netscape Messenger allows you to interface with POP3 and IMAP mail
servers. Other character based and graphical based mail clients are
also available. You also get the mail server!

Info-Zip is available. gzip and the -z option of tar will give you
something that's roughly equivalent to PKZip in Windows. Of course,
WinZip is NOT available for Linux.

Netscape Messenger allows you to interface with nntp news servers.
Multiple servers is handled just like in FreeAgent. Other character
based and graphical based news clients are also available. You also get
the news server.

ApplixWare and StarOffice can both canvert from and save to Microsoft
(and other popular) formats. Microsoft has announced a version of MS
Word for the Linux platform last month (but few news agencies picked it
up, search the MS web site for Linux). :)

I never used PIM, don't know if one is available.

PGP is available on Linux. Multiple shells are available too. Don't
know about them together.

Linux can only run DOS and Windows 3.1 software, not Windows 95
software.

No way. I ran X Window System in Linux on a 8MB RAM 486/33 with
adequate performance before. But I believe running X on a 4MB machine
requires a lot of patience.
