OpenLinux is just Caldera's name for their distribution. It doesn't
mean it's any more open than the others. :-)
It's rpm-based like Red Hat.

There's a review of OpenLinux in the July issue of Performance Computing
(formerly the once-cool Unix Review which has now taken an NT slant).
There's some comparison with RedHat regarding the installation.

Simply put it is said to be a good choice for total beginners as the
installation assumes you know nothing at all (not as flexible as
Red Hat's though) and it comes with a bunch of commercial software
not included in other distributions such as:
  StarOffice
  Netscape's FastTrack http server
  Software AG's ADABAS D relational database
  BRU2000 backup software (both console and X)
  
And other things. Including the Looking Glass drag-n-drop desktop.
And two CDs worth of freeware.
This applies to the Standard package. Not sure what's included in
the Basic one.
