Memory I can understand, since the emm386 of open dos isn't as robust as
the ms equivalent, but performance? I find my programs run just as happily
on open dos as they do on ms, and while I've not seen any run slower, I
have seen troubles with sound cards on some games, and one pascal compiler
I have (an old one called fsp pascal) that apparently uses extended memory
differntly than open dos expects, I've had 0 problems with open dos.
Perhaps if you elaborate on your difficulties, we could help to solv them.

My roommate is using netscape quite successfully under open dos, and he's
had 0 troubles with that aspect of things. Again, if you elaborate a
little, perhaps I could get him to help you out some.
Why do you need to use mscdex? Is nwcdex not working for you? I personally
find nwcdex to run faster, take less memory, and support my 7-disc changer
a whole lot better than does mscdex. It also handles my cd-r recordable
drive just fine as well, so I can't guess what kind of troubles you might
be having with it. Again, elaboration is the key word here. We can't
help if we don't know what the problems are. :)
As for another version, I don't know anything about it, other than
something I read on either this list or another dos related one that
support was being pulled for the product, and no more releases were going
to be made that were free, but since I have no verification of that
statement, I'd take it with a grain of salt, until we see something
official on the web page.
