Reece, thank you VERY much for your generous and detailed 
explanation. You were apparently quite correct; I followed your 
advice and instructions and booted clean with no drivers, installed 
Win3.1, and run it successfully on OpenDOS emm386 without himem.sys 
at all. I installed Internet Explorer 3.03 later, and got one sharing 
violation as the setup ran - had to run the install a second time -- 
but other than that i have had no problems. That was probably buggy 
MS installer code anyway :Q.

I re-installed OpenDOS over Win3.1 to get the OpenDOS support and 
configuration for Windows that I didn't have to begin with. Kind of 
a lot of work but that's how it goes. At least the OpenDOS 
installation is amazingly friendly and convenient. Caldera sure makes 
MS look bad.
