On 97/11/13 Sam asked:

A serial connection in the background is officially unsupported, as some
of the documents stated. However, I have been successful to do this even without FIFOed ports, on slow machines (386sx18) and medium data rate
(9600Bd). I even ran multiple serial connections in the background
simultanously.
So it also appears to be a matter of the underlaying hardware (Chipset), especially the design of the COM ports, and the PIC, and a matter of the configuration:
Please try to fiddle with TASKMGR.INI:
[Slice]
Foreground=5
TickRate=1
[COMx]
Timeout=0 or 65535
[Shell]
Idle=False/True
