What was the DOS version? I tried that with OD 7.01, MS 5.0 and IBM 7.0 and
it did not work. I do even remember i've seen a reference on add-on character
device driver that provides raw disk io feature some years ago - afair it
was a part of some commercial package and i could not find it (although i
liked the idea).

Yep (i used mft instead - it can do the same job) - but there are no
special files for block devices; only character ones.. Block devices are
listed by number and seem to have no corresponding files.
