Other than possibly some very recent shared images, none of that is 
written in C in VAX/VMS. In other words, it's not C's fault that 
VAX/VMS memory requirements have gone up.

Furthermore, all of the things that _might_ be C are pageable; you don't
need physical memory to hold them, you just need pagefile space.

Call DEC and tell them you want part number QB-001AB-E8. That's the
source listings kit for VAX/VMS. It will cost you somewhere around
US$1,935 according to the Digital online store.

You won't get listings for LMF and a few other similar bits of the system,
but you will get listings for the kernel, drivers, utilities, and even
DECwindows.
