I *FINALLY* got around to trying out webspyder.
Here are my comments and bugs found.
1) I am particularly annoyed by the password encryption used and
the need to enter the registration key into the program since it
is free to begin with - ie: what am I registering? None the less
I finally got past the thing and got it installed.
Keep in mind that the following bugs are possibly allready
discussed on the group, but I haven't read the group for a while
so bear with me. Also, the following are only presented to help
in fixing bugs and are not complaints or meant to be negative.
System: AMD 486DX2-66 16megs
Running under MSDOS 6.22 with QEMM 8.00 and no DPMI or DPMS
I'm using SMARTDRV and MSCDEX
Bugs:
The setup program doesn't allow you to configure the IRQ of the
modem. My modem is on COM3 IRQ 2 and I could NOT put it on IRQ 2
no matter what I tried. I manually edited net.cfg and put INT 2
but it didn't work. The file says "INT 2 PORT 3220" I don't
have a clue where "3220" comes from but my COM 3 is on the
standard 2E8 or 2F8 address (the standard one). My modem is on
IRQ 2 though and changing the IRQ is not possible as all other
IRQ's are used in my system and my other software is configured
to use IRQ 2 on the modem.
The setup program doesn't let you type in a long modem INIT
string. It does let you put 2 strings, but it should allow a
longer string too. My init string is:
AT7F&C1&D2S11=60S95=47
Since webspyder's internal setup lets you change the init string
as well, and since it lets you type more characters than the
INSTALL program, I'd consider this a bug.
Webspyder evidently doesn't like being installed on my H: drive
as well. I reinstalled it on my C: drive, but still couldn't get
it working. I suspect it is an IRQ problem.
When I pick "connect" it just hangs there until I hit ESC to
cancel.
The browser looks ok to me, but it doesn't work entirely properly
with my video card. I picked "v" for VESA card since it detected
my card as a Trident. My card is a Cirrus Logic 5430 with 1M.
The browser's graphics are somewhat slow, but I suspect this is
because of it's beta-status and that it is using VESA instead of
a native driver.
All in all, what I've seen so far has impressed me and I'd be
greatful to anyone who can help me fix my IRQ problem and any
other suggestions.
