Can anyone give details of incompatibility. I have been running
WfW 3.11 on Novell DOS (various updates) for some time without
problems.

I think if you want a MS-DOS clone, you should use MS-DOS.
I use Novell DOS because I like it and it does everything I need
with some features (Undelete, DPMS, Mem) that are better than, or
not provided by, MS-DOS.
